Leaders are responsible for presenting a frame, construct, or reality for the cultures of their organizations. Dimensions of a presented reality can include the following;
- History of the organization (how it grew to its present state, obstacles which it was challenged by and overcame, right and costly decisions.
- The character or culture of the organization. What the organization values. Traditions, rituals, how it functions. The structure of the organization.
- Strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities also known as SWOT analysis.
- Resources.
- Human capital management practices.
- External environmental awareness, including continued understanding of consumer wants and needs.
The above assist in a leaders ability to present a vision to an organization. Visions create symbolic meaning, a path requiring a planned way or “Tao”. Visions bring organizations to life. Each vision is unique for each organization as no organization has the same DNA. Visions bring value because they provide direction allowing for organizational alignment. Leaders inspire others in understanding where an organization presently is positioned, where it would like to be, and how to get there. Providing direction fosters action, with a vision productive action will follow allowing for organizations to reach their dreams.
Having a vision for an organization is very powerful, it creates meaning for stakeholders within an organization, provides challenging environments for employees, energizes others, brings the future to the present, and creates a common identity. These advantages create a unique competitive advantage for organizations seeking to increase their human capital. Organizations become motivated, have a purpose, they have an identity, and this makes them uniquely competitive. Leaders have the ability to inspire, attract, align, and energize followers with a vision. All action can be aligned with a vision saving time and money. Does your organization have a vision?
